SDG 2: Zero Hunger Annual Report of 2023/2024

The SDGs activities officially commenced in Bells University of Technology, Ota by the Vice Chancellor’s approval of the SDG Team leads on 28th August, 2023. Many of the academic and non-academic staff were grouped into all the 17 SDGs with the exception of SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and strong Institutions) based on their areas of research interest and specializations. The SDG 2 members are as follows:

The first meeting of SDG 2 team members was held virtually on 9th of September, 2023 where decisions were taken on the modalities of meeting, collating data, communicating information and progress monitoring and evaluation of the success of the goals. Series of activities were conducted during the monthly meetings and deliberation of the members both online and onsite.

Data Collation on publications in Scopus indexed journals and community service activities

Information on the SDG 2 related research published in Scopus-Index journals were collated and members were regularly encouraged to ensure increase in such publication. Records of community services performed before the inauguration of the team were also collated for documentation and follow up activities. These include outreaches to secondary schools, markets, etc.

Creation of Research Groups

Members were classified into four research groups based on specialization to develop researchable SDG2 target/indicator related joint research titles that cover the interest of the different professionals within the group. The diversity of professionals within sub-groups would ensure interdisciplinary touch and high quality research.

Food/nutrition and health based Community Outreach

The SDG 2 Team collaborated with SDG 1, 3, the National Association of Food Science and Technology Students’ (NAFSTS) and Nutrition and Dietetics Students Association (NUDSA) Bells University of Technology Chapter to conduct Food/nutrition and health based Community Outreach. This was carried out in April 27th, 2024 to the market traders at Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. This outreach was very enlightening, creating positive impact in the life of the market people.

Community Outreach with Nutrition and Dietetics Students Association (NUDSA)

The team jointly held a community outreach programme with the Nutrition and Dietetics Students Association (NUDSA) of Bells University of Technology Ota. This was carried out during the NUTRITION WEEK in the second week of May, 2024 and this entailed outreaches to some neighboring industries such as Nestle food, Ota Ogun State, Nigeria.

Relationship with the Local Government Chairman

The SDG 2 team delegates visited thevisited Ado Odo-ota LGA on 7th May, 2024 to discuss and strategize on successful community outreach. The visit included the SDG 3 Team lead t facilitae collaborative outreaches across Ado odo-Ota local government area. The meeting provided the modality of collaborating with the LG leaders to access the variousCommunity Development Association (CDA) for positive impact from outreaches.

Awareness Campaign on Breastfeeding on World Breastfeeding Week

SDG 2 carried out a loud campaign and public talk on breastfeeding during the world breastfeeding week 2024. This was carried out within and outside Bells University community on the last day of the breastfeeding week 7th August, 2024.

Other Community Services by SDG 2 are summarized below:

1. Training of Anuoluwapo farmers association in Ota on improved crop production and income generation

2. Seminar on ‘Appropriate diet for healthy life’ to clergies, elderly and adult members of Awori Diocese

    during the 5th Synod in Ota in June, 2023

3. Talk on Diet and Detoxification’ during Lagos Anglican Schools Management Board Staff in August, 2023

     Training retreat on the theme “Overcoming Burnout in the Quest for Sustainable schools Development”

4. Talk on “Importance of Age-Appropriate Nutrition in early Childhood” during Nurses Workshop session

    on 17th of November, 2022

5. Organized Presentation to group of pregnant women during antenatal clinic at Ace-Medicare Clinics, Ota

    by 200 Level students on ‘Nutrition in Pregnancy’

6. Volunteering as stem educator for science students in indigenous state secondary schools in Ibadan for

    International Day for women and girls in Science as anchored organization for women in Science

All these activities provide significant means through which the University impacts the community toward reducing hunger and raising the standard of living of the people.
