– Celebrates a Decade of Visionary Leadership and Research Excellence
Bells University of Technology, Ota, reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable development as it hosted the 2026 edition of the Bells University Multidisciplinary and Advanced Research Conference (BUMARC), a gathering that united leading academics, researchers, policymakers, industry experts, and innovators in pursuit of solutions to some of today’s most pressing global challenges.
Held under the theme “Harnessing Technologies, Innovations, and Multidisciplinary Approaches for Sustainable Development Goals,” the conference was more than an academic gathering. It also marked a defining moment in the university’s history as the Bells community celebrated the remarkable ten-year tenure of its outgoing vice chancellor, Professor Jeremiah Oludele Ojediran, whose visionary leadership has significantly shaped the institution’s growth in research, academic excellence, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships.
The opening ceremony brought together distinguished guests from across Nigeria’s higher education sector, government, industry, and the diplomatic community, setting the tone for three days of scholarly engagement, meaningful dialogue, and institutional reflection.
Welcoming participants, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Johnson Adeleke Adeyiga, described the conference as both a celebration of multidisciplinary research and a tribute to transformational leadership. He noted that the gathering reflected Bells University’s unwavering commitment to generating knowledge that addresses real-world challenges while advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. According to him, universities must continue to serve as centers where innovative ideas are transformed into practical solutions capable of improving lives and driving sustainable national and global development.
In his opening remarks, the vice-chancellor, Professor Jeremiah Oludele Ojediran, welcomed participants to the conference and reflected on the university’s remarkable journey over the past decade. He highlighted significant progress in academic excellence, research productivity, infrastructural development, industry collaboration, and community engagement, describing these achievements as the product of purposeful leadership, strategic thinking, and a shared commitment to innovation.
Professor Ojediran challenged participants to embrace collaboration beyond disciplinary boundaries, emphasizing that the increasingly complex issues confronting the world, including climate change, food insecurity, public health, technological disruption, and economic instability, require integrated approaches and collective expertise. He expressed confidence that the conference would stimulate transformative research, inspire new partnerships, and generate practical solutions with lasting impact beyond the walls of the university.
A defining highlight of the conference was the keynote address delivered by the Vice-ancellor of Covenant University, Professor Timothy Ashibel Anake, titled “Visionary Leadership and Institutional Transformation: Advancing Academic Excellence, Innovation, and Sustainable Higher Education.”
Delivering a thought-provoking address, Professor Anake challenged universities to rethink their role in an era defined by rapid technological advancement, artificial intelligence, climate change, and shifting societal needs. He argued that institutions of higher learning must move beyond being centers of knowledge dissemination to becoming engines of innovation, entrepreneurship, policy development, and societal transformation.
He stressed that the future of higher education depends not merely on technological advancement but on visionary leadership capable of cultivating environments where research leads to innovation, ideas become enterprises, and education produces graduates equipped to solve society’s most complex problems. Sustainable development, he noted, can only be achieved through genuine multidisciplinary collaboration that brings together expertise across engineering, science, technology, healthcare, the humanities, business, and public policy.
Professor Anake further outlined five defining pillars of transformational leadership in higher education: vision, people, innovation, partnerships, and values, describing them as the foundation upon which globally competitive universities are built. While acknowledging the transformative potential of emerging technologies, he maintained that lasting institutional excellence remains rooted in ethical leadership, integrity, and a clear sense of purpose.
Paying tribute to Professor Ojediran, the keynote speaker praised his decade of dedicated service, noting that true leadership is measured not only by physical development or institutional achievements but also by the enduring culture of excellence established for future generations. He also reaffirmed the importance of stronger collaboration among Nigerian universities in driving research, innovation, and national development.
The conference program also featured an engaging panel discussion on transformational leadership in higher education, a dramatic reenactment celebrating Professor Ojediran’s visionary leadership and contributions to the university, the presentation of awards and gifts, his farewell address, and a group photograph session in honor of his distinguished service.
Beyond the ceremonial activities, BUMARC 2026 showcased the breadth of research being undertaken across multiple disciplines. Through parallel technical sessions, scholars presented research addressing critical issues in financial technology, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, architecture, healthcare, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, urban development, manufacturing, food security, and digital transformation. The diversity of the presentations reflected the conference’s central objective of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration as a pathway to sustainable development.
