BELLSTECH EXCELS AT HYDROGRAPHIC RESEARCH COMPETITION

Following a rigorous and comprehensive assessment process in a highly competitive contest, Bells University of Technology Ota, won the Third Position (Second Runner-Up) at the National Hydrographic Research Competition. The National Hydrographic Agency (NHA) in collaboration with the Nigerian Hydrographic Society (NHS) hosted the 2025 World Hydrography Day (WHD) Celebration from 19 – 21 June, 2025 with the theme “Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action”.

As part of the WHD 2025 activities, a Hydrography Research Competition for Universities was organized to engage undergraduates in discussions on the significance of seabed mapping and hydrography. Bellstech’s winning research topic which aligns with the IHO theme was “Designing a Sustainable Seabed Mapping Strategy for Nigeria’s Coastal Waters:  Balancing Economic Development and Marine Conservation.

The 3rd place winning entry was the joint efforts of two Students of the Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics – Esther Adeyemo, (500 level) and Timileyin Ayoola (400 level) were supervised by the Head of Department, Dr. Godwin Omenka Ode. The N2,000,000 (Two million naira) price for the 3rd Position along with two laptops for the winning team was presented to the University, at the 2025 WHD Awards and Dinner Night, on Saturday, 21 June, 2025 at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jeremiah O. Ojediran, RE (COREN) FNSE, FNIAE, IION, while receiving the winning team in his office commended the efforts of the College for training the prize-winning students in the specialized knowledge of Seabed Mapping. In his words, “It is a thing of joy to see Colleges and students going the extra mile, like this, in portraying Bellstech as a citadel of academic excellence”. He further promised to give such efforts the required support and recognition it deserves.
