Climate Action

The maiden meeting of the members of the SDG 13 (Climate Action) team was held I 28th September, 2023. The team lead, Dr Folasade Ogunleye, with her members, developed strategic plans for the Climate Action activities of the University to achieve the 13th sustainable development goal of the United Nations. Monthly meetings either onsite or virtual were held in the year under review and many climate related activities and programme were carried out. Enlightenment were also provided on several aspect of the goal such as climate change mitigation (e.g., reducing emissions), adaptation strategies (e.g., building climate resilience), climate finance,

Education on climate issues (e.g., awareness campaigns) and Disaster risk reduction. The members are as follows:

Collaborative research on Climate Related Solutions

The SDG 13 partners with the members of the Bells University Centre for Climate Chance (CCC) in the major activities carried out. They facilitate joint research on climate related issues and co-supervision of students research on interdisciplinary subjected whose finding are published in Scopus-indexed journals.

University-wide Climate Change Awareness Lecture

The SDG team had earlier played a major role in the Climate change awareness lecture delivered on 31st May 2023, titled “The Centre for Climate Change at Bells University of Technology: A Response to 21st Century Challenges to Human Existence,” delivered by the Director of CCC, Prof. S. B. Agbola. This livestreamed event sensitized the staff students, and other online participants to climate challenges

Climate Change sensitization Programme by SDG 13 in collaboration with Climate Chance Centre and SDG 4

As part of commitments to sustainability and youth education, Bells University of Technology, through the Centre for Climate Change, SDG 13  and SDG 4 teams, organized a one-day sensitization programme themed “Climate Champions: Empowering Young Minds for a Sustainable Future.” On 9th October, 2024 on the campus. Attendees included 394 students from 22 Secondary Schools in Ota, Ogun State and its environs. The programme was livestreamed and served as a platform to inspire climate consciousness and environmental responsibility among the next generation. The event featured a mix of speeches, expert sessions, student presentations, and workshops. Key objectives and activities included: Equippingstudents with knowledge, fostering action-oriented thinking and encouraging dialogue and critical thinking.

Collaboration with NiMet the Bells University CCC

Bells University of Technology through her Centre for Climate Change in collaboration with SDG 13, established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which was formally signed on 20th January 2024 in Abuja by the Vice Chancellor and the CCC Director. This landmark partnership facilitated the construction of a new meteorological enclosure at the University and at the Obasanjo Farm, Abeokuta, completed in May 2024, and the supply of advanced meteorological instruments in July 2024. Reconnaissance visits to teak plantations

As part of its climate change solutions, the team joined the CCC for a need assessments, reconnaissance visits to teak plantations and the Owowo Dam, and the Obasanjo teak plantations in Oke Odan, Alamala, and Aiyetoro, Ogun State and in collaborations with the Ogun State Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry, and Physical Planning. This was aimed at exploring the impacts of climate change on local livelihoods and ecosystems and also exploring opportunities for carbon credit and forestry research.

The SDG 13 team conducted and participated several other activities which include:

  • Signing a MoU with Heritage Promotion Enterprise on 22nd January 2024 to enhance grant writing and research funding for climate projects.
  • International collaborations initiated through virtual meetings with representatives from the University of Manchester (UK) and North Carolina University (USA), expanding the CCC’s academic visibility (SDG 17)
  • Participated in the NiMet 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction Conference in Abuja (20th February 2024) by the Vice Chancellor, CCC Director, and Team lead: Dr. Folasade Ogunleye, promoting institutional engagement in national climate strategy.
  • Expanded research and grant-seeking by collaborationwith the Heritage Promotion Enterprise on 22nd January 2024, and international engagement meetings with the University of Manchester (UK) and North Carolina University (USA), aimed at enhancing climate research capacity and global visibility
