SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 4

The maiden meeting of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 (Quality Education) of Bells University of Technology was held on 22nd September, 2023. The team Lead, Dr Sola Owolabi, ensured that the initial monthly meetings were judiciously employed to educate and update the members on the main focus of quality education some of which include the principle of equality, equity, inclusivity and lifelong learning, good quality as well as good quality and quantity of teachers, school infrastructure, digital transformation, high cost of education and free education. The SDG 4 team conducted several special educational programmes and outreaches in 2023 and 2024 targeted at promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics among primary and secondary school, and some higher education students in Ota, Ogun State and other States of the country. 2023 International Literacy Day

Lectures on the state of literacy in Nigeria were present by SDG 4 team at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria on 14th September, 2023. The need to emphasize on inclusivity in education to drive sustainability in education was addressed. All age groups were represented at the programme. One ‘silent echo’ at the event is the indigenous approach to literacy and the need to decolonize education. The need for an infusion of our folktales, idioms, drama, science  technology and other innovations to ensure that the army of African  youths develop into adulthood with visible signs of character and learning.

Collaboration with the Goethe-Institut for a Seminar to promote reading and writing

A seminar on Parental involvement in the academic achievements of children was organized on 22nd November, 2023 using facilitators from Goethe-Institut Germany and Bells University. This trained the students from Bells Comprehensive Secondary School, Ota on better approaches to reading and writing.

Bootcamp on Leadership, Bibliotheraphy, and ICT Skills

SDG4 Team in collaboration with Bells University Library Unit, and ICT Resource Centre successfully organized a transformative bootcamp on Leadership, Bibliotheraphy, and ICT Skills from the 12th to the 30th of August, 2024. The intensive program was specifically designed for the children of staff members at the University, aiming to equip them with the necessary skills to thrive in an ever-evolving educational and professional landscape. It provided a multi-faceted learning experience, combining leadership development, bibliotheraphy, and ICT competencies in a structured and engaging manner. Participants were introduced to the concepts of bibliotheraphy and cinematherapy, which combine books and films as therapeutic tools to enhance emotional and psychological well-being. The University Management Team greatly supported this bootcamp.

Collaboration in a Fight against illiteracy Programme, Osun State

The fight against illiteracy programme by Dr. Margaret Abimbola of Ajayi Crowther University with the collaboration of the SDG 4 was held at the Federal Science and Technical College, Ilesha Osun State in June, 2024.

Reading Habit Development Programme in Calabar, Cross River Sate

Students and teachers of Federal Government College Ikom, and Federal Government Girls College, Calabar showed thirst for knowledge as Bells SDG 4 team lead shared the Pyramid Theory, Technoturity, and LER (Learning, Earning and Resting) model. These were linked to reading habit development.

The University was able to reach out to several schools through the SDG 4 activities and the effects of these activities on the educational life of the participant cannot be overemphasized.
