DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL AND BIO-RESOURCES ENGINEERING (ABE)

Tuition-free Programme

Historical Background

Bells University of Technology, Ota, Nigeria took off in 2005 while college of Engineering was established in 2009 with two Departments. In April 2023, the University got approval from National University Commission (NUC) for the commencement of Bachelors degree programme in Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering (B. Eng) as full Department in the College of Engineering. However, this makes the seventh department in the College for enrolment of students in 2023/2024 academic session. The programme operates academic curricula that are tailored along the stipulations contained in the NUC CCMAS as required by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN. The programme is Tuition-free.

Philosophy, Aims and Objectives of the programme

Agricultural and Bio-Resources engineering encompasses the application of all engineering knowledge to solving problems encountered in agricultural production, handling and processing of biological materials for food, feed, fibre and fuel.

Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering is a 5- years Programme. Students will go for Students Works Experience Programme (SWEP) for a period of 3 months at the end of their 200 Level.

They Engage in three (3) and six (6) months of Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in 300 Level and 400 Level respectively. At 500 Level, a student will carry out supervised research project in their areas of interest.

The student is required to present his/her results orally before a panel of examiners, that is, by oral presentation and defence.

The programme is designed to prepare students for careers in:

  • Farm power and machinery engineering;
  • Soil and water resources engineering;
  • Crop processing, storage and agro-industrial engineering;
  • Farm structures, rural electrification and environmental control engineering;
  • Forestry and wood products engineering; and
  • Food process engineering.

natural resources system: irrigation and drainage, erosion control and water conservation;

environmental system: farm structures, waste remediation and farm electrification;

biological system: sensors, controls and computer models to monitor biological processes and conversion of bio-based resources to food, fuel and others.

It is thus very wide and all encompassing.

This programme emphasizes skills that can gainfully employ Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineers in all agricultural, bio-resources, environmental, rural and industrial environments as Design Engineers, Test Engineers, Product Engineers, Plant Engineers, Quality Control Engineers, Process Engineers, Energy Engineers and Advisers, Consulting Engineers and Environmental Engineers.

They can also be employed as Irrigation and Drainage Engineers, Waste Management Engineers, Machinery Maintenance Engineers and Dairy Engineers among others. In addition to competence in problem-solving technical, technological and modern digital skills, the programme equips the students with appropriate cognitive, critical analytical and innovative skills, emotional and behavioral skills including communication, interpersonal, continuous and life-long learning capabilities that will make them to be conscious of their importance, and the need for sustainability in relation to the consequences of their professional activities on the human environment and ecosystem.
